The Java sparrow (known in Japan as the buncho) is a small bird native to Indonesia that has been introduced to several other regions worldwide. Kept as a pet in Japan since the Edo period, it was selectively bred to create an all-white variant (among other color mutations).
Despite its common English name, it is actually an estrildid finch rather than a true sparrow.
